Description: The Registered Nurse applies knowledge of nursing
theory, technical skills, and communication skills in delivering
high-quality compassionate care to patients and families. The
Registered Professional Nurse assesses patient needs and develops a
plan of care in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team.
Direct patient care is provided, and the nurse evaluates patient
progress while coordinating care delivery throughout the patient's
episode. The Nurse develops specialized skills in caring for
patients admitted with medical conditions. Care is provided to
adult, adolescent, and geriatric populations with various medical
conditions. Patient and family education is a key accountability to
facilitate understanding of self-care post-hospitalization,
including lifestyle changes that support health and healing. The
Registered Nurse is expected to promote comfort and provide
emotional support in a healing environment. The nurse applies
knowledge and skill in the delivery of care. Patient and family
needs are assessed through active listening and social
perceptiveness. An individualized, age-appropriate, and culturally
relevant plan of care is created to address identified health
problems. Goals are set collaboratively with the patient, family,
physician, and healthcare team, and patient progress is monitored.
The plan is adjusted based on patient response or changes in
condition. The nurse promotes, advocates for, and protects the
health, safety, and rights of the patient. Mutual trust, respect,
and cooperation among team members are encouraged to achieve the
best possible patient outcome. Teaching others is appropriate, and
tasks are delegated according to the individual's education,
training, and scope of practice. The nurse understands the
responsibility to safeguard public safety through compliance with
infection prevention strategies. Patient and family motivation is
enhanced by teaching necessary information for continued care at
home. Learning styles are assessed to structure education sessions
for maximum understanding. Teachable moments are sought during care
delivery to emphasize pertinent information. Retention of key
points in the self-care process is evaluated through questions.
Tools and information are provided to assist the patient's family
after discharge. Documentation of education provided and the
patient/family response is required. Quality and effectiveness of
nursing practice are systematically evaluated, and results are used
to initiate changes in practice and care delivery. Self-evaluation
of practice is engaged to identify strengths and areas for
professional development. Accountability to increase knowledge and
enhance skills is taken seriously. Logic and reasoning are used to
assess alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to
problems. Nursing practice emphasizes making meaningful connections
with patients and their families. Efforts are made to develop
trusting and caring relationships through presence, listening,
communication, and engagement. The nurse strives to understand what
is most important to the patient and family, acknowledging them as
the central focus of all care and services. Creating a healing
environment is recognized as a key element of professional nursing
practice. Skill in applying interventions, including medication
administration, is demonstrated. Occupational exposure to
bloodborne pathogens is reasonably anticipated. Required tasks may
involve potential contact with blood, body fluids, and tissues.
