Description: The Registered Nurse applies knowledge of nursing
theory, technical, and communication skills in delivering
high-quality compassionate care to patients and families. The
Registered Professional Nurse assesses patient needs and develops a
plan of care in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team. The
RN provides direct care, evaluates patient progress, and
coordinates care delivery throughout the patient’s episode. The RN
develops specialized skills in the area of patients admitted for
medical conditions. The RN provides care to adult, adolescent, and
geriatric populations with medical conditions. The Registered Nurse
is accountable for patient and family education to assist in
understanding self-care beyond hospitalization. This includes
lifestyle changes to support health and healing. The Registered
Nurse promotes comfort and provides emotional support in a healing
environment. The RN applies nursing knowledge and skill in the
delivery of care. They assess patient and family needs through
active listening and analyzing data obtained through observation,
assessment, technology, or communication. They create a
developmentally and age-appropriate, culturally relevant,
individualized plan of care to address the health problems
identified. In collaboration with the patient, family, physician,
and healthcare team members, the RN sets goals and monitors the
patient’s progress. The RN adjusts the plan based on patient
responses or changes in condition and reprioritizes needs. They
advocate for and protect the health, safety, and rights of the
patient. The RN encourages mutual trust, respect, and cooperation
among team members to achieve the best possible patient outcomes.
They teach others as appropriate and delegate tasks consistent with
the individual’s education, training, and scope of practice. The RN
understands the personal responsibility to safeguard public safety
through compliance with infection prevention strategies. They
motivate the patient and family by teaching them what is needed to
continue care and healing at home. The RN assesses the patient and
family learning styles and structures sessions to maximize
understanding. They seek teachable moments to emphasize pertinent
information and evaluate retention of key points in the self-care
process. The RN provides tools and information to assist the
patient’s family after discharge. They document the education
provided and the patient and family’s response to the education.
The RN systematically evaluates the quality and effectiveness of
nursing practice and uses the results of quality improvement
activities to initiate changes in their practice and care delivery.
They engage in self-evaluation of practice, identifying strengths
and areas for professional development. The RN takes accountability
to increase knowledge and enhance skills. They use logic and
reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative
solutions and approaches to problems. Nursing practice reflects the
importance of making meaningful connections with patients and
families. The RN seeks to develop a helping, trusting, and caring
relationship by being present in interactions, listening,
communicating, and anticipating patient and family needs. They
acknowledge that the patient and family are the central focus of
all care and services. The RN embraces the importance of creating a
