Serving in Med/Surg Environment as a Registered Nurse License: NYS
RN Licensure Required Certifications: BLS, ACLS Must-Have: - NYS RN
Licensure - BLS Certification - ACLS Certification Description: The
Registered Nurse applies knowledge of nursing theory, technical,
and communication skills in delivering high-quality compassionate
care to patients and families. The RN assesses patient needs and
develops a plan of care in collaboration with the interdisciplinary
team. The RN provides direct care, evaluates patient progress, and
coordinates care delivery throughout the patient's episode. The
Med/Surg RN develops specialized skills in cardiac care, including
telemetry monitoring. The RN is accountable for patient and family
education to assist them in understanding self-care beyond
hospitalization, including lifestyle changes to support health and
healing. He or she promotes comfort and provides emotional support
in a healing environment. The RN applies nursing knowledge and
skill in the delivery of care by actively listening and analyzing
data through observation, assessment, technology, or health team
communication. A developmentally and age-appropriate, culturally
relevant, individualized plan of care is created to address the
health problems identified. In collaboration with the patient,
family, physician, and healthcare team members, the RN sets goals
and monitors the patient’s progress. The RN adjusts the plan based
on patient response or change in condition or reprioritization of
needs. The RN advocates for and protects the health, safety, and
rights of the patient. Quality and effectiveness of nursing
practice are systematically evaluated, using the results of quality
improvement activities to initiate changes in individual nursing
practice and influence care delivery. Self-evaluation of practice
is engaged in, identifying strengths and areas for professional
development, and accountability to increase knowledge and enhance
skills is taken. Logic and reasoning are utilized to identify the
strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or
approaches to problems. The RN demonstrates skill in the
application of nursing interventions, including medication
administration. Patients and families are motivated by teaching
them what is needed to continue care and healing at home. The RN
assesses the patient/family learning styles and structures sessions
to maximize understanding. Teachable moments are sought during the
care delivery process to emphasize pertinent information. Questions
are asked to evaluate the retention of key points in the self-care
process. Tools and information are provided to assist the patient
and family after discharge. The education provided and the
patient/family response are documented. Mutual trust, respect, and
cooperation among team members are encouraged to promote
collaboration for the best possible patient outcomes. The RN
teaches others as appropriate and delegates tasks consistent with
the individual’s education, training, and scope of practice.
Infection prevention strategies are complied with, and competencies
required to care for the specific population in the area assigned
are maintained. Potential safety risks and
inappropriate/questionable practices are reported. Leadership
awareness is promoted, and positive change is fostered. Rounds are
conducted per protocol, utilizing tools and equipment needed to
keep the patient and family informed, engaged, and safe. Nursing
practice reflects the importance of making meaningful connections
with patients and families. A helping, trusting, and caring
relationship is developed by being present in the moment of
interaction. The RN listens, communicates, engages, and anticipates
the patient/family needs. Understanding what is most important to
the patient/family is strived for, acknowledging that they are
central to all care and services. The importance of creating a
healing environment is embraced as a key element of professional
