Job Description:

The RN First Assistant (RNFA) is a highly trained Registered Nurse who holds both a CNOR certification and has completed an accredited RNFA program through a college or university. In this role, the RNFA collaborates with surgeons and the healthcare team to ensure safe operations with optimal outcomes for patients. The RNFA practices perioperative nursing and must possess the necessary knowledge, skills, and judgment specific to the operating room and the RNFA role. Working under the surgeon's direction, the RNFA contributes during the operative phase of the perioperative experience. When not in the RNFA role, the RNFA will perform the duties of an OR staff RN. This position requires a New York State (NYS) Registered Professional Nurse license, completion of an accredited RN First Assistant course, and CNOR certification. Robotic surgery experience is preferred, particularly in areas such as robotic urology, robotic gynecology, robotic colorectal, robotic surgical oncology (e.g., Whipples, gastrectomies, hernias), robotic thoracic, and robotic general surgery (e.g., gallbladders, appendectomies). Proficiency in perioperative nursing practice, including scrubbing and circulating experience, is preferred. The role does not require weekends but involves evening call and rotating holiday responsibilities. Two years of experience in the operating room, with preference given to candidates with experience in a Level 1 trauma setting, is required.
